Figuring out what you want to do

How do you figure out what you want to do?

This question can haunt us at night and our waking moments. It taunts us and can also make us feel like crap if we can’t answer it.

When people ask this question, it’s often in relation to their job. What kind of job do they want? What kind of career to they want to build?

If you’re not sure what kind of job you want, start by evaluating your current job. What do you not like doing? What did like to do the least? What do you enjoy doing? What do you wish you did more often?

Place this code where you want an ad to appear. Do this for each individual ad unit, on every page.

From there, find a job that has more qualities of things you like to do or enjoy doing. Sounds simple. I know. But it really can be this simple.

If you’re just not sure about what you’re supposed to do with your life in general, know that you’re not alone. I’ve felt that way, and I’m sure a lot of people have felt that way too.

I’ve found that if I was trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do with my life, I’d never figure it out because change is inevitable.

I used to think that I have to find the “perfect” job for me and then work at that job for the rest of my life. Long and behold, I’ve changed careers 3 times in the last 3 years. (I say career because it’s 3 very different industries and very different jobs).

Growing up I always felt like my “calling” was supposed to be my job. But now, I know it’s not. My “calling” is more like my life purpose. My job is just a branch of that purpose. This purpose is fulfilled through my hobbies, relationships, passions, and jobs.

What I’m supposed to do with my life is more than my job. It’s more about how am I impacting the people around me at this point of my life, how am I serving others, loving others, inspiring & empowering others.

Some things I’ve realized:

  • What I want to do may change as I get older, and that’s completely okay

  • I can’t figure out what I want to do by just thinking, I have to start with something

  • Don’t be afraid to get your feet wet

  • My job doesn’t define me

  • My hobbies don’t define me

  • You can be multi-passionate

  • You don’t need to have a paid job related to your “passions”

  • You don’t need to monetize your “passions”

  • You are allowed to participate in everything you care about

Don’t think so much about what you should do with your life and just go do something. You won’t get clarity from thinking.

Apply to that job. Go on that trip. Try that hobby. Start that business. Just do it. And if you realized it’s not for you, evaluate, then do it all over again.

If you’re struggling with overcoming fear, check out this post here. I hope this helps you to just go and try something. Clarity will come.
