Living Room Furniture & Decor Review

Today I want to share with you my current living room space. I’m not an interior designer and I do not take pride in my home decor skills (I actually don’t have any lol). But I wanted to let you know the furniture I’ve bought, my decor choices, my honest reviews, and some future goals for this space.

My apartment has an open concept: the living room and kitchen is one big open concept. If you put a wall between the two spaces, the living room is a big square. While I like the higher ceilings, the living room is not outrageously huge. The apartment finishing is more modern and has hardwood floors. With that in mind, I knew I didn’t want a lot of clutter because that can make the space look even smaller. I felt like the less decor I have, the more open the space would be. I also didn’t want huge furniture pieces because that can also make a space appear smaller. Because the style of the apartment is already modern, I wanted to add little elements to make it feel more homey and charming and not so...structured or symmetrical. (Does that even make sense? LoL).

Before I go into the furniture pieces and reviews, I also want to mention that I did put all these pieces together myself. The directions were, for the most part, easy to follow on all these pieces. You can hire someone to put it together for you, but if you’d rather save money and you have time, DIY.

COUCH:

I got this couch purely for aesthetic reasons. It’s contemporary, it compliments the color of the room well, and I love the linen fabric.

Comfort level: I would say it’s like a 6 out of 10. It’s not super uncomfortable, but it’s not the most comfortable thing.

Pros: It folds down into a futon which is great in case there are visitors. It looks beautiful. I love the grey fabric used. It’s also sturdy and was easy to put together. Love the contemporary modern twist and the color.

Cons: It can seat up to 3 adults comfortably (you can push up to 4). The cushion and fabric does stretch over time with usage. If you have kids that run and jump around, I wouldn’t recommend this couch.

RUG:

I still want a bigger rug, but I haven’t found a nice square rug I like. So for now, this one will do.

Pros: Love the fluffiness & shagginess of this rug. Love the white with the subtle grey lines. It helps to brighten up the space.

Cons: It’s mostly white which can stain easily. The shaggy rug comes with longer yarn which means you can lose things easy in this rug lol.

OTTOMAN:

I got this because it’s cute and I love the rustic elements of it.

Pros: Multi-fuctional. This ottoman right now serves as a coffee table (because I haven’t found one I like yet). It also works as extra seating when there are people over. This ottoman is sturdy & I love the look and feel of it.

Cons: None.

LADDER SHELF:

I’ve always wanted a ladder shelf for as long as I can remember so I knew I had to get one.

Pros: I love everything about it. The industrial look with the metal and the dark wood. The height, the different shelf sizes, the width, the colors—I like everything. It’s also sturdy.

Cons: None (unless you’re not a fan of ladder shelves).

TV CONSOLE:

I was SOOO EXCITED when I found this midcentury modern TV console. I love love this stand! My brother had gotten this 58 inch TV and I wanted a stand that was longer than that and behold—this TV stand!

Pros: Love the aesthetic: the rounded stand and corners, the redder wood stain, the open and closed drawers. I love that it’s longer than the TV. I love that it’s slim and not bulky.

Cons: This was probably the most complex piece of furniture to put together.

FLOOR LAMPS:

I knew I wanted a floor lamp with shelving. I also wanted something that had different wood finishes from the tv stand and the ladder shelf. When I found this light wood floor lamp, I knew I wanted it.

Pros: I like the extra shelving it has, that gives me more storage space. I like the lighter wood. It’s also rectangular so it can fit almost anywhere.

Cons: Not super sturdy.

PLANTS:

I will dedicate a separate post just for my plants (because I still want a couple more). But for now, here are the plants I have.

Pros: Plants definitely bring life to the apartment. They can also act as decor pieces.

Cons: Maintenance

The wicker baskets here were thrifted. I like the look of the natural material.

WHY MIXED WOODS:
I intentionally bought pieces with different wood finishings and stains because I like the look of different woods together. I think it adds more charm to a place. I also like that it looks like borrowed pieces coming together. It just makes the space more interesting and asymmetrical.

FUTURE GOALS:

I do still plan on getting a coffee table. I want a round one, I just haven’t found a round one that I like.

I also want to get a side table. This way there’s a place to put keys, books, phones. It’ll be an extra storage space.

I also want to put up some minimalist artwork above the couch. I have a few, I just need to hang them up.

If you’re moving out, one thing to keep in mind is you don’t need to have all your furniture all at once. Take your time to get things you really like and things you need.

For things like shelves and tables, always check second-hand stores because you never know what you’d find. I especially like local thrift stores and FB marketplace.

Alright, that’s my living room apartment for you! Everything is linked along with similar products. I hope this was helpful.
